Topic: Commander of a Nuclear Attack Sub Then, a Beneteau 53 Now: Lessons Learned

The typical cruising sailboat has little in common with a nuclear submarine. But Capt. Mark Lenci, USN (Ret.) has applied many of the lessons learned during his naval career to his current command, a 53-foot Beneteau. “The U.S. nuclear submarine force is unique, even within our Navy,” says Capt. Lenci.

“It has been forged over 70-plus years under tried and proven standards for technology, people and leadership. It prides itself on continuously adapting and updating those three areas based on objective, dispassionate and critical analysis of both what goes right and what goes wrong. The result is a nuclear and ship safety record that is unmatched in any field of endeavor. My talk will share principles illustrated by actual lessons learned hard by the submarine force, but directly applicable to any vessel, particularly our sailing and power yachts.”
